James Anderson To Represent New Zealand in World Series of Poker Finals

Auckland, New Zealand --- Scottish-born Aucklander James Anderson emerged victorious in the recently concluded Skycity Auckland's World Series of Poker Satellite final held June 18. The winning combination of confidence, luck and lots of practice proved to be indispensable like always.

Anderson pocketed a total prize package of nearly a whopping $40,000. The prize also included an automatic entry into the World Series of Poker's (WSOP) showpiece event, the $US10,000 entry No Limit Texas Hold'em Championship held in the United States, to be held from July 28 until August 10, accommodation while there and roundtrip airfares for two to Las Vegas and NZ$10,000 spending money.

Anderson's final winning hand of an Ace and a Seven beat second place winner Martin Cardno's Ace and Four as another Seven turned up in the community cards.

Cardno, who chose to wear dark sunglasses and a baseball cap for the finals, took away $6,000 cash. Third placer Andres Birt received a $5,000 cash prize.

The said poker tournament is one of only a handful of poker tournaments in the Southern Hemisphere to offer the winner a seat at the World Series of Poker main event in downtown Las Vegas.

Anderson was presented with his prize June 18 by David Christian, Auckland's General Manager of Gaming. Christian wished Anderson all the best as he battles it out against world poker greats in downtown Las Vegas next month. The World Series of Poker is undoubtedly the biggest event on the world poker stage. It is universally considered the ultimate achievement in any poker player's career to gain the coveted title of World Champion, and thus would probably be the culmination of any poker player's dreams. "It will be one of the greatest experiences of his life, and I wish him all the best at the WSOP. We'll certainly keep a close eye on his progress," Christian says.

It is anticipated that this year's field will exceed 8000 players, with an overall prize pool of more than $US80 million. Anderson has been a longtime poker player from his native Scotland, and had difficulty dealing with the scarcity of poker circuits in Auckland at the beginning.
