Three Card Monte Poker

Three Card Monte Overview

Three Card Monte is a very simple game with just one card facedown and two cards face-up. It is suitable for 3-8 players.

Three Card Monte Rules

Before play, each player must ante up, placing a small sum in the pot to get the game started. The dealer then gives each player one card facedown, followed by one card face-up. Then there is generally a betting round, although not all dealers have a betting round at this point.

Betting round: Beginning with the player to the dealer’s left, each player has three choices. They may choose to match the current bet. This is referred to as calling. They may choose to pay more in order to force other players to match a higher bet. This is called raising. They may also choose to stop playing and add no more money to the pot. This is called folding.

Another card is dealt face-up. There is another round of betting. This one is not optional. All dealers have this betting round. Then there is a showdown. The player with the best hand wins. Since the hand is only three cards, the general hand ranking used in poker does not apply. Some dealers will use this ranking system: Three-of-a-Kind beats pair, which beats high card. Others consider a straight-flush, a flush, and a straight better than a pair, in that order. It is important to verify the house rules before play. The player with the best hand wins the pot.
