Pig is a mix of a stud poker game and a draw poker game. With cards dealt face-up, it is similar to a stud game, but then there is a draw round. Pig can be played by 3-8 players.
Before the initial deal, each player places a sum of money in the pot. This is referred to as the ante and it ensures that every player has an interest in the game. The dealer gives each player three cards face down. There is a round of betting. This round begins with the player to the dealer’s left and moves clockwise around the table. Each player, in turn, decides whether to match the current bet and call it. They may also choose to increase the amount of the current bet, referred to as raising. If a player does not wish to wager any money, they may fold, giving up any chance at winning.
When the betting round ends, each player receives a card face-up. There is another round of betting beginning with the player with the highest card showing, and moving clockwise around the table. Each player receives one more card face-up. Again, there is a betting round, starting with the player showing the best hand.
All players turn their cards face down, and examine their cards. They then select cards from their hand and give them back to the dealer. They do not show these cards to anyone. The dealer gives them the same number of cards from the top of the deck.
There is a final round of betting beginning with the player to the dealer’s left. Then there is a showdown. Players show their cards, and the player holding the best hand wins the pot.
