Monterey Stud Poker

Monterey Stud Overview

Monterey Stud is a variant of Roll Your Own in which the first hole card and any other cards of its rank are wild. Like Roll Your Own and Seven Card Stud, it is played by 3-7 players.

Monterey Stud Rules

To begin the game, players ante up, placing a small sum of money in the pot. The dealer then gives each player three cards, all face down. Players look at their cards. The dealer counts to three and all players simultaneously flip one card face up. The first round of betting begins, usually starting with the player showing the highest upcard. That player must bet a minimal amount to stay in the game, and each player after him, going clockwise, must match that amount, called calling the bet. If a player wishes to make the bet higher, they may raise. Each player who wishes to stay in must meet the new bet, or raise it themselves. Players who do not wish to spend any more money may fold. This means that they quit playing until the next hand.

All players who are still in receive a fourth card, face down. The dealer counts to three and they select one of the face down cards to turn over. The next round of betting is played starting with the player to the left of the dealer.

The fifth and sixth cards are played the same way, each followed by a round of betting.

The seventh card is dealt face down. There is a final round of betting, followed by the showdown. Players form the best poker hand that they can using five of their seven cards. The earliest dealt card that is still face down and all cards of its rank are wild. The player with the best hand wins the pot.
