Monte Carlo Guts Poker

Monte Carlo Guts Overview

Monte Carlo Guts poker is a very simple variation on Basic Guts poker, using three cards instead of two cards for each player. Suitable for three to eight players, online Monte Carlo poker uses no bluffing, only a system of staying in or opting out in each round.

Monte Carlo Guts Rules

To begin play, players ante up, putting a small amount of money in the pot. The dealer distributes three cards, face down, to each player. After examining their cards, players simultaneously announce whether they wish to stay in or drop out. Usually this is done by taking a coin or chip under the table and lifting a closed fist out from under the table. All players open their hands at the same time. Players whose hands are empty have dropped out and players who have a coin or chip in the hand have chosen to stay in.

All of those who have chosen to stay in show their hands. While there may be variations depending upon the house rules, the following is usually the order for ranking hands:

  • High card
  • Pair
  • Straight (three cards in a row, unsuited)
  • Flush (three cards of the same suit)
  • Three-of-a-kind
  • Straight flush (three cards in a row, suited)

House rules may make three-of-a-kind the best hand possible, and some reverse the positions of straights and flushes.

The player who stayed in and has the best hand wins the pot. Any other player who stayed in must match the pot.

The dealer deals the next round. The game continues until only one player stays in. That player wins the pot. Because the pot can increase rapidly, often the players decide to cap the pot to keep it from growing out of control.
