Four-Three Guts Poker

Four-Three Guts Overview

Four-Three Guts is an unusual game in that it is a high-low poker game which is played as a guts game. There are two declaration rounds. Each player who stays in the game gets seven cards with which to make a five-card hand. The game is suitable for 3-8 players.

Four-Three Guts Rules

As with all guts games, Four-Three Guts begins with an ante. Each player puts money into the pot. The dealer gives each player four cards. Then there is a declaration. In order to declare, each player takes a token into his hands, moves his hands under the table and withdraws one hand from under the table, balled into a fist. All players open their hands at the same time. If the token is in the fist, the player is in. If the token is not in the fist, the player is out.

All players who stay in receive an additional three cards, face down. In some games, there is a round of betting after this. If so, it is advisable to have the betting go into a side pot. Then there is a second declaration. This time, there are two tokens. One shows that the player intends to go for the high hand while the other shows that the player intends to go for the low hand. Players must choose at least one, but they may choose both.

Players form the best hand possible from five of their seven cards. If they have decided to go for high and low, the two hands may be different. The player with the best high hand takes half the pot, while the player with the best low hand takes half the pot. If a player takes both, it is called scooping the pot. If no one declares for one, then the winner of the other takes the whole pot. All other players who stayed in must match the pot. As a result, a player who tries for both and wins only one comes out behind.

The next round is dealt. The game continues until only one player stays in for high and one for low or only one player stays in at all, and then the pot is taken and no one has to replenish it.
