Follow the Cowboy is a version of Seven Card Stud which is played exactly like Follow the Queen, except that kings and the cards that follow them are wild instead of queens and their trailers. Like Seven Card Stud, Follow the Cowboy is suitable for 3-7 players.
In order to start the game, players ante up, placing a small sum of money in the pot. The dealer then gives each player two cards facedown. The third card is dealt face up. If a face-up card is a king, then it is wild as is the next card dealt after it (i.e. to the next player). If two kings (or more) are dealt, only the trailer of the last king is wild. When all players have their first three cards, there is a round of betting. First, players with the king or the trailer must pay a small sum to stay in. Usually the sum for the player with the trailer is half that of the sum for the player with the king.
In the betting round, each player, beginning with the player to the dealer’s left has some choices:
When the round of betting is over, the fourth, fifth, and sixth cards are dealt face up. Again, any kings are wild and the final card dealt after a king is also wild. There is a betting round after each card is dealt. If there is no king face-up at this point, the cards are collected and shuffled, players re-ante, and the game begins again.
Otherwise, the seventh card is dealt face-up. After the seventh card is dealt, there is a final round of betting, followed by the showdown. Players show their cards, and form the best possible hand out of five cards. All kings, the trailer, and any facedown cards of the same rank as the trailer are wild.
The player with the best poker hand wins the pot.
