Five-Card Draw Poker

Five-Card Draw Poker Overview

Five-Card Draw is suitable for 3-8 players and used to be among the most popular poker games. Some forms of it exist as video poker today in casinos. Typically, however, most casinos and poker rooms don’t play Five-Card Draw.

Five-Card Draw Poker Rules

In Five-Card Draw, the players place an ante in order to play. The ante is a pre-agreed amount of money, added by each player to the pot before play begins. If Five-Card Draw is played in a casino, instead of placing an ante, the game may begin with two players placing what is called a blind. When players place a blind, the first places the small blind, and the second places the big blind, which is usually double the small blind. After the ante is placed, the dealer deals five cards to each player. Players examine their cards, but do not show them to each other.

After each player has received their five cards, there is a round of betting. Beginning with the player to the dealer’s left, (If blinds are placed, betting begins with the player to the left of the big blind.) each player can elect to match the current bet, also known as calling the bet. They can choose to raise the bet by adding an additional amount of money. In order to stay in the game, the rest of the players need to add this same amount. The third option is to fold. If a player folds, they do not put any more money into the pot, and they stop playing.

After the betting is completed, those players remaining in the round can trade in their cards for new ones. Each player, in turn, places as many cards as he or she chooses, face down, on the table, stating the number. Players may return as many as three cards, unless they have an ace. If they have an ace, they may return four cards, but they are generally asked to show the ace. After a player discards their cards, the dealer gives them the same number of cards from the top of the deck. Most dealers gather the cards that have been discarded, while others simply leave them on the table until the end of the round.

After the players have received their new cards, there is another round of betting. This round of betting begins with the player to the dealer’s left regardless of whether blinds were placed or players started with an ante. This round of betting is followed by the showdown. All players who have not folded show their cards, and the best hand wins.

There are several variations of Five-Card Draw. Some involve multiple draw rounds while others involve making one card, frequently the two, or deuce, wild. The dealer generally announces the variant when they begin to deal. After each round, the player to the dealer’s left becomes the new dealer for the next round.
