Basic Five Card Stud Poker

Basic Five Card Stud Poker Overview

Basic Five Card Stud is a simple poker game suitable for 3-8 players. While many complex variants are played, Basic Five Card Stud is very straightforward to learn and play.

Basic Five Card Stud Poker Rules

To begin the game, players ante up. They place a small starting sum in the pot. Then the dealer deals one card facedown to each player. This is followed by a round of betting, beginning with the player showing the highest card, and moving clockwise around the table.

Players may elect to do one of three things. They may call the bet, matching the amount other players have added to the pot. They may raise, meaning that they and all other players will need to add more funds to the pot to stay in. If they don’t want to stay in, they may fold. A player who folds is out of the game and is ineligible to win any part of the pot.

After the betting is completed, the dealer gives each player their third, fourth, and fifth cards, all face up. There is a round of betting after each card is dealt. The final round of betting is followed by the showdown. Players show their cards, and the player with the best hand wins the pot.
